I have tried as you said, on the server “shared folders -> open files” there are no trace of the file I have tried to open. I have checked the permissions and they are set for “Domain users” to modify. There is no “deny” permissions. I have took the ownership of the file and I’m member of “Domain users”.

The share permissions are configured to “change” and the folder itself has “modify” permissions for “Domain users”. I have checked if there is any hidden office file (word or excel) and no results. The problem is happening when I double click to open an office document but when I “right click” on the file and then choose “open” the file is opened without errors and I can modify it and save it. Maybe there is some registry settings to be changed or some incompatibility between Widows 7 workstations and Windows 2003 sbs shared folder.

I have spent days tracing this and here is what I've found so far. Double click on the document, it opens as 'read only' -- if the user selects 'notify me when document becomes available for editing' the document will sometimes become available after some random time-- usually within thirty seconds. Other times, if the users clicks OFF the document he dbl-clicked on to open, Word suddenly reports document is available for editing.

Create a file server on your network, share files of various types, some of them Word Documents, some PDFs, texts and others. On the server, open up computer management, go to 'open files' (this could probably be done with other sysinternals utilities). Start tapping 'f5' to refresh. On Windows seven box, remote shared folder, click on any file except the office document. Nothing shows up in 'open files' list on file server.

Single click on Word document, BAM, file shows up on server as an 'open document' and will remain so for around 15 seconds. Even HOVERING over the file will indicate a file is open on file server. There is no office product installed on the Windows 7 box as all applications are published through Citrix. Still investigating. This appears to be an issue specifically with Windows 7, not any particular version of Office as no Office product is installed locally.

None of this behavior occurs on XP only boxes. Ie, connect to file share with XP box (again, no locally installed version of Office), single click on document, refresh 'open files' list on remote server, nothing shows up.

Windows 7 appears to 'know' about Office documents natively and is doing some sort of preview. Will continue to investigate and report what I find here.

Well for me, I figure out that the McAfee Agent was causing the error. My company uses McAfee AV and McAfee Agent, we programed the Agent to find update with our own server.

I had to re program the Agent to find it using the McAfee servers. We use McAfee agent here as well. Except we use it everywhere, same version.

I have 8.8 installed on both Win 7 and Win XP boxes, and again, the behavior only follows the Win 7 boxes. I will look into McAfee as a possible culprit anyway. Thanks for the tip. I'll uninstall it and see if I get the same behavior.
