I actually work for Apple and run a photography business on the side and from my personal experience a MacBook Pro w/ retina suits photographers much better. If you're doing small edits, yes it will work. If you're going to be doing lots of photos, go with the Pro. Occasional edit, you're probably ok with an Air. Edit: You might be surprised by how light and thin the retina display models are.
