I have Verizon FIOS Internet. I have optimized my windows based devices, and it has increased their speeds. I want to do the same with my IPad Mini 2, but the FIOS Speed Optimizer states 'not for IOS products' when I have attempted it. In my monthly bill, there is always additional ads stating use your ipad and iPhone on FIOS.

Verizon tech support says there is an app for MAC products, but they don't seem to understand MACS are a different creature. I even tried APPLE Support, who state it would be up to Verizon to come up with the appropriate optimizer. Anyone out there who can help. It would be much appreciated. I can think of only two way to compress/optimize internet for the iPad. One is to create an app that does all the browsing.

Getting ethernet download speeds on my Asus around 300-500, but uploads well over 900. Router speed shows 940/1200. Using a Mac Pro plugged in, I get almost 800. Did the FiOS Optimization Tool.

The optimization would only work in that app. The Opera Mini web browser was optimized/compressed at one time. I don't know if it still is. It is not possible for an app to optimize the internet for other apps or the system itself.

Apps are not give that level of system access by iOS. Most desktop computer OS's can install software that will override, or intercept all internet data; which is why it's fairly easy to do on those platforms. This method uses software to do the compressing/decompressing. It is not as efficient or as fast as using built in hardware.

I suspect that hardware is what the Verizon router FIOS stuff uses. The other method is to use a proxy. In this method all data is compressed at a remote server, in between the internet and iPad. It is more limited, since all it can do is strip out unnecessary stuff and further compress other files like jpg and audio (degrading their quality). An app can be used to set up a proxy, but it does not actually do anything with the data itself. With current data speeds being what they are, and most people expecting high quality pictures, audio, video, etc., almost no one does this anymore. It was fairly common when people were still transitioning between dial-up and faster technologies.

How to Optimize Your Mac for Gaming You can start by freeing up disk space on your machine. Your hard drive is not an essential component for gaming, but it is needed in order to install games onto your machine, as well as for running games and apps smoothly. Uninstall unwanted, unused and outdated apps to make room, especially those that run needlessly in the background or that take up a lot of space unnecessarily. Sift through your files and delete what you don’t need.

It might be painful to let go of your old music or photos but just think of the gaming as you delete them, or simply move what you want to keep to the cloud or an external storage device. Do whatever you can to free up disk space by removing everything that you don’t want or need. Next, it’s time to free up RAM, which truly is important for the performance of your games. RAM is the type of memory that is required for live processes and having enough of it free will make games faster and smoother. Disable apps that start up automatically and keep other apps closed during gaming time. Any apps that are open will consume resources, weakening the performance of your Mac.

One of the biggest consumers of resources is your web browser, so make sure you close your Chrome or Firefox before you game. Having them open in the background will almost definitely slow the game down.

You should also close heavy web browser plugins like Java and Flash or just uninstall them completely if you don’t need them. If you really want to nitpick for more RAM, you can even disable OS X features that you don’t need like the Dashboard, but this is going a bit far if you don’t really need the extra memory. You can also check on your Mac’s overall performance before gaming with the Activity Monitor, which will show you the GPU and disk resources, as well as the apps and processes that are running and the amount of memory they are consuming. This will allow you to see if you have overlooked any background apps that are taking up too much space or memory without purpose and close or uninstall them.
