The Mac App Store is your friend. If you have self control, or no money, it’s a great place to browse for Mac apps. This week I came across a couple of tools in the MAS that I already have on my Mac. Not every Mac user needs an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) app, but if you want to connect your Mac to a server online, or other computers, FTP is the quick and dirty way to go.
I wasn’t surprised to see on the Mac App Store. It’s a fast, popular, multi-window FTP app that’s loaded of features.

What did surprise me is. It’s also on the MAS, but has a price tag. The donation ware version of CyberDuck is. Both of these FTP apps will give you nearly, but not all, every function you’ll need to copy or move files from your Mac to a remote source.
CyberDuck’s interface is more complicated than Yummy FTP. For me, file transfers have always been a little slower in CyberDuck, too. But it handles FTP, FTP/TLS, SFTP (SSH), WebDAV, Google Storage and Google Docs, Rackspace Cloud storage, Windows Azure, and Amazon S3– far more options than in the speedy Yummy FTP.
What I don’t like about CyberDuck is the hierarchical file view. Drag and drop works OK, but would be better with multiple windows panes (left and right) as found in Yummy FTP. On the other hand, Yummy FTP is remarkably fast, features both single and dual window panes, a column view like the Mac’s Finder, a built-in text editor, a scheduler, Quick Look, a good bookmark manager, Growl support, and some remote file editing functions. Which of the two you should choose is dependent upon your needs. CyberDuck connects to more remote sources. Yummy FTP has more user friendly features, such as the dual panes, and a useful connection recovery system.
Prices are different, too. CyberDuck from the developer is donation ware, but has a hefty price tag on the Mac App Store. YummyFTP is similarly priced from the developer, unless you buy it on the Mac App Store, and it’s only $10.
Integrated with external editors You'll also find that Cyberduck is compatible with most external editors such as BBEdit, TextWrangler or TextMate. Cyberduck is also integrated with Dropbox for exchanging files. Some users have found that Cyberduck can sometimes be unreliable when transferring files. Depending on the reliability of the server you are using, you may find that connections time-out half way through, particularly when using SSL connections. Simple to create a new connection Adding a new connection in Cyberduck is very simple and only takes a couple of seconds with helpful tutorials for first time users. For convenience, you can even drag and drop bookmarks to and from Finder.
The Cyberduck interface is clearly laid out, easy to use and with an making it a good starting point for those new to FTP. Cyberduck is an FTP, SFTP, WebDAV, S3 & OpenStack Swift browser to transfer files to your web hosting service provider and connecting to cloud storage accounts from Rackspace Cloud Files, Google Storage and Amazon S3 with the same easy to use interface with quickly accessible bookmarks. The browser allows to download, upload and move or copy files using drag and drop with an hierarchical view to browse large folder structures efficiently. Transfers are handled with ease including synchronization of local with remote directories.
